Farmers, here in Maryland, cut of the bark of trees close to the ground so the sap of the trees stop flowing. Therefore as the sap dries up the trees leaves and upper branches die. Then the farmers plant seeds in small hills around the bare trees, where sunlight can now easily reach the ground.
By the way if you haven't noticed yet, Maryland's major crop is... TOBBACO! YAY!
